Sport Calgary and Calgary Multisport Fieldhouse Society Applaud Approval of Multisport Fieldhouse

CALGARY, Alberta — Sport Calgary and the Calgary Multisport Fieldhouse Society (CMFS) jointly applaud City Council’s decision to approve a financial strategy for capital funding of a multisport Fieldhouse.

“Sport Calgary and CMFS have been vocal advocates for a standalone multisport Fieldhouse at Foothills Athletic Park”, said Murray Sigler, Sport Calgary CEO. “Council’s decision is one that will be widely supported by sport participants across the city. The case for a Fieldhouse is clear, driven by the grassroots efforts of CMFS.”

A Multisport Fieldhouse is a multi-purpose facility that will accommodate play, practice, training and competition in multiple sports and activities for people of all ages and abilities, from grassroots kids to high performance, adults and seniors.

The proposed Multisport Fieldhouse location is at Foothills Athletic Park (near McMahon Stadium), which is an excellent central location with great accessibility by transit for all Calgarians.

“We are excited to hear about the funding announcement regarding the long-awaited Multisport Fieldhouse at Foothills Athletic Park,” said Jason Zaran, CMFS Chair. “We compliment the City of Calgary and Council on their foresight and dedication to keep the Fieldhouse front and centre in the discussion around much needed infrastructure for Calgary. This shows the City’s commitment to amateur sport and providing facilities for Calgarians of all ages to participate and live healthy active lifestyles.”

“There are still open questions to consider, such as selecting a Fieldhouse operating model that works best for the City of Calgary, while ensuring affordability and accessibility for all Calgarians, “ said Sigler. “On behalf of the Calgary sport community, we will support the City as it proceeds with next steps.”

Both Sport Calgary and CMFS look forward to learning more about the financial framework after the next meeting of Council on March 18.
