Thank you to all the athletes, businesses, sport organizations and VIP who joined us to celebrate sport in Calgary.
With over 350 attendees, this successful event provides a great opportunity for the
business and sport communities to connect, along with aspiring and
high performance athletes, in recognizing the integral role of sport in enhancing quality of life, community well being, and economic
prosperity in Calgary.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Michael Urquhart, Chairman of Sport Calgary presented the awards:
The Sport Leadership and Excellence Award recognizes and
celebrates the
outstanding contribution of a sport organization or club to the
betterment of sport in Calgary. Our finalists are Babe Ruth Baseball
Association of Calgary, Girls Hockey Calgary, Talisman Centre for
Sport and Wellness and WinSport Canada.
Our 2011 award winner is Special Olympics Calgary.
The organization provides affordable, rewarding, high-quality sport programs to Calgarians with an intellectual disability, regardless of age or ability. The programs offered, give
athletes the opportunity to develop sport skills, social skills, and self
esteem in a safe supportive environment. Through sport, Special Olympics plays
an important role for the integration of its members into the community and
helps athletes reach their desired level of athletic achievement.
The Business and Sport Excellence Award recognizes and celebrates a
corporation that provides outstanding, innovative and consistent
support to sport in Calgary. Our finalists are INTACT Insurance Company of Canada, Tim Hortons and Tuxedo Source for Sports.
This year’s winner is TimberTown Building Centre Ltd. This organization has been actively supporting amateur sport, in particular Volleyball, since 2002. They provide exclusive free access to their company gym, courts and strength training equipment during after school hours and weekends. They have also established a very successful Coaching Enhancement Fund for coaches and training staff involved in athlete development.
