Long-track speed skater Cindy Klassen, who set a Canadian record with five medals at the Torino Olympics, was named the winner of the Lou Marsh Award on Monday.
The award is given annually to Canada's outstanding athlete by the Toronto Star and is named after the newspaper's former sports editor. The winner is chosen by a panel of sports editors and broadcasters. Read more....

City Council approves funding for the Calgary Sport Council |
|
November 27, 2006 City Council approved a budget adjustment for base funding for the Calgary Sport Council for 2007 and 2008. The funding request made to Council in September will support the Calgary Sport Council's role in the implementation of Canada's first Civic Sport Policy.

OTTAWA -- Parents anxiously awaiting details on the child fitness tax credit got a somewhat clearer picture Thursday when an expert panel delivered its recommendations on what activities should qualify, but if parents were expecting to see a list of what sports count and what sports do not, they didn't get one.

Calgary Sport Council elects new Directors |
|
On Thursday, October 26, 2006 at the Calgary Sport Council Annual General Meeting four directors were added to the Board of Directors.
Justin Higa (Cardel Place), Mary Ann Downing (Calgary Track Council) and Nicky Brown (Calgary Rugby Union) were elected for a two year term. Current Board member Daryl Leinweber was re-elected for a two year term also. Many thanks to Board Members retiring this year; Jennifer Gibson, Patti Newfield, and Scott Hayes. |

Athletes will be faster, stronger with new centres for Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat |

It is expected the centres will be operational by November 2006, joining a provincial network that also includes the centre already established in Red Deer.
